The focus of this class is theories of human movement known as Effort/Shape and Space Harmony developed by Rudolf Laban. It introduces this material through improvisation, composition, observation, readings, and group discussion, as both a methodology for observing/describing the structural and qualitative aspects of human movement and a means of experiencing a greater range of personal expressivity and creativity in movement. This approach to movement analysis can be applied to, and provide insight into, the study of history as anthropology, psychology, theater, and education as well as dance performance, choreography, teaching, and scholarship.
Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
