Dance Composition

Required Sequence: DANC249 & DANC250

This is a basic course in creating and performing choreography with emphasis on the diversity of techniques and methods available to the choreographer. Assignments will revolve around inventing, organizing and evaluating movement in a variety of dance styles including modern, jazz, ballet and others. The focus in the first semester is on solo work and movement invention. The second semester focuses on group work. This course is a prerequisite for DANC371 Choreography Workshop.

Lynne Anne Blom & L. Tarin Chaplin, "The Intimate Act of Choreography" and selected materials.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Weekly dance composition assignments, short papers, attendance at dance concerts and a final public showing of work completed during the semester.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

Students must be concurrently enrolled in a dance technique course. Students must participate as members of the production crew for two dance concerts during the course of the year. Previous exposure to dance (in Modern Technique or Intro to Dance) is required. Students who have some experience with movement/choreography prior to Wesleyan may be accepted. This is an ampersand course with DANC250.

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
