Jazz Dance I

This course will take a historical look at jazz movement, the early elements and development of jazz dance and how it coincides with the music of jazz and the life conditions of the Afro-American people. The three general areas to be covered are 1) traditional African elements 2) plantation dance of release and relief 3) early post slavery dance favorites.

MAJOR READINGS

Selected short readings from periodicals.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Participation in Intro. Dance concert. Written final exam.

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
