This course will examine how law helps to construct gender identity and sexuality in the United States. Among our topics will be the law's relationship to stigmatized sexualities, the social meanings of gender identities, and discrimination based on gender or sexual identity. Our materials will consist almost exclusively of judicial decisions, as well as excerpts from secondary readings that seek to place their various topics in a legal/doctrinal/jurisprudential context. Consequently, students shou ld understand that this is first and foremost a course about law and society.
Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
