Romance
COL387 SP

This course is an examination of romance as a literary genre, primarily in narrative, though dramatic examples will also be presented. Particular attention will be paid to the conventions of romance and their persistence in European and American literature, taking account of definitions of romance by literary theoreticians. The course will emphasize medieval romances, but other works to be read will be drawn from among those of Apuleius, Chaucer, Malory, Ariosto, Shakespeare, Pushkin, Twain, Kaf ka, Tolkien and sundry other worthies both famed and forgotten.

Apuleius, GOLDEN ASS Arthurian romances by Chretien de Troyes and others Malory, MORTE D'ARTHUR (selections) Shakespeare, THE WINTER'S TALE Spenser, FAERIE QUEANE (excerpted) Ariosto, ORLANDO FURIOSO Laclos, LES LIAISONS DANGEREUSES Twain, TOM SAWYER or HUCKLEBERRY FINN Tolkien, LORD OF THE RINGS and some literary criticism (Frye, Jameson, et al.). Note: Tentative, subject to change.
