Freud and Psychoanalysis

This course offers a close, critical study of Freud's psychoanalytic writings through the major phases of his career. We will be attending to individual texts, ongoing issues, the cogency of Freud's theoretical formulations, the reasons for his revisions and the range of his relevance. We will consider developments in the theory and practice of psychoanalysis since Freud.

MAJOR READINGS

Extensive readings from STUDIES ON HYSTERIA and the INTERPRETATION OF DREAMS through CIVILIZATION AND ITS DISCONTENT and "Analysis Terminable and Interminable," including clinical papers, case studies, theoretical papers, papers on technique and on culture. Additional readings in Winnicott, Loewald, and current psychoanalytic authors.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Papers. Oral presentations.

Sophomores may not preregister for this course. Instead, interested sophomores should speak with the instructor regarding enrolling in this course during Drop/Add. First-year students are excluded from this course.

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
