Analyzing different versions of the Don Juan and Faust stories from the 16th century through the 20th, this course will investigate some of the basic ingredients of these mythic characters and address the questions to what extent--if at all--they might represent what could be called essential features of Western man. An understanding of the historical conditions of these texts will contextualize their messages, while a modern critical reading will try to unmask some of their ideological presuppositions
