Joan of Arc, cross-dresser, witch, heretic, saint, hero, savior of her country, exemplifies the production of the past at its most problematic. She was tried three times (burned, rehabilitated, canonized) and subjected to the scrutiny or glorification of some 3,200 books, including not only works of history but also plays and novels, not to mention movies and operas by Verdi and Tchaikovsky. This course will examine all the evidence about Joan of Arc and, thus, what we know about Joan of Arc and how an d why she could be projected as a figure of romance, tragedy, and parody.
