Contemporary Critical Theory

In a combination of short lectures and intensive seminar discussions, we will go over selected texts by thinkers who pioneered some of the major changes in contemporary literary and cultural criticism.
MAJOR READINGS
Selections from essays and books of K. Marx, S. Freud, F. Nietzsche, F. deSaussure, R. Barthes, J. Derrida, M. Foucault, A. Gramsci, R. Williams, L. Althusser, G. Spivak.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
A very short paper each week for the first 8 weeks and a longer final paper.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
This course is primarily designed for juniors and seniors with a real interest in critical theory. A preregistered student who fails to attend the first class will be dropped. Not open to students who have taken
