A survey of twentieth century literary, critical and cultural theories. We shall be emphasizing key concepts -- such as language and textuality; identity, subjectivity and gender; power, knowledge, cultural institutions and the state, and key figures, such as Saussure, Barthes, Bakhtine, Gramsci, Benjamin, Foucault, Althusser, Jameson, Scott, Butler, and Chow.
