Biological Molecules

This course uses an interdisciplinary approach to the investigation of a series of biological molecules with an emphasis on structure and interactions of proteins and nucleic acids. The course begins with an elementary introduction to the structure and morphology of polypeptides and oligonucleotides and techniques for structural studies including X-ray crystallography, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and molecular dynamics calculations. The structure of a series of biological molecules of both historical and contemporary interest is then considered. Implications of the structural information in the development of modern biological chemistry and molecular biology will be considered. The material will be readily accessible to biology, chemistry, molecular biology and physics majors.
