In a Manner of Speaking: The Roman Art of Rhetoric

The course will study the fully developed system of ancient rhetoric as represented in the standard Roman treatises. Subjects discussed will include Roman theory and practice of rhetoric; rhetoric and education; the relationships between rhetoric and philosophy and between rhetoric and poetry; the history of attitudes to rhetoric, including the modern reappropriation of some of its categories.
