Alexander the Great
CCIV330 SP
Through a close reading of the major ancient sources (in translation) and a selection of modern critical essays, we will examine both the life of Alexander and the historiographic issues involved in interpreting
fragmentary and often contradictory
evidence.
MAJOR READINGS
Plutarch, THE AGE OF ALEXANDER (select lives) Arrian, THE CAMPAIGNS OF ALEXANDER Callisthenes, THE ROMANCE OF ALEXANDER THE GREAT Essays by Tarn, Welles, Hamilton, Badian and others.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Several short (2 page) papers; one longer (10-20 pp.) paper with class presentation at the end of the term.

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed
