This is an advanced course in the evolution and ecology of the bacteria and viruses that cause disease in humans and other hosts. We will discuss recent research in the following areas: evolution of virulence; the role of disease in directing human evolution; the roles of evolution in determining the development of AIDS within an HIV-infected host; the role of genetic exchange in promoting adaptation in pathogens; the role of plasmids in promoting antibiotic resistance and virulence; forces promotin g genetic cohesion among closely related populations of bacteria or viruses. The course will be partly lecture and partly discussion of recent journal articles.
