An increasing proportion of the population in developed countries consists of elderly people. This course will deal with current research on the biological basis for aging and on the diseases to which the elderly are particularly vulnerable. Different theories for aging will be explored, and experimentation on model organisms used to probe the causes of aging in humans will be discussed. Social aspects of gerontology will also be considered.
