The Cell in Development
BIOL321 FA

This course will examine the cellular basis for animal development, focusing on cell movements, cell adhesion, cell polarity and the cell-cell interactions that underlie development. The course will highlight recent advances in our understanding of the molecular mechanisms of these cell behaviors and how they lead to tissue morphogenesis. Most examples will be from vertebrate model systems, although some drosophila work will be covered.

MAJOR READINGS

Text: Wolpert, "Principles of Development."
Review articles and research papers from the current scientific literature will be assigned and suggested.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Class participation in discussion, oral presentations, major library paper on a relevant topic of the student's choosing.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

Course will be taught in lecture style and part in participating seminar style.

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
