This course deals with the organization of the human body. Although a subject of focal concern in cultural theory, our approach will be from within. We will examine the structure and function of the various parts of the body involved in such systems as the immune system, which functions in defense against disease; the neuromuscular system, which functions in information integration and movement; the endocrine system, which functions in growth, reproduction and adaptation; and the digestive, circulatory and excretory systems, which function in the processing of food. We will also look at different types of cells and key molecular processes underlying the different systemic functions. The course will also consider pathological conditions associated with malfunctions at the molecular level. Finally, we will explore such issues as the AIDS epidemic and conservation biology, which have global as well as personal implications.
Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
