Gender and Identity: Manet to Man Ray

This course will be a thematic investigation of the construction of identity in French painting and photography from 1860-1930. We will examine the ways in which gender positions are formulated in the work of such artists as Manet, Morisot, Degas, Renoir, Cezanne, Seurat, Van Gogh, Matisse, Picasso, Duchamp and Man Ray. We will look at visual images form a variety of methodological perspectives: social historical, feminist, psychoanalytic, Marxist, etc.

MAJOR READINGS

Selected readings from Linda Nochlin, Tamar Garb, Griselda Pollock, Briony Fer, Gil Perry, Charles Harrison, T.J. Clark.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Each student will be expected to write one short (2-3 pages) paper and one longer (10-12 pages) research paper; lead class discussion for two of the assigned texts; give a presentation based upon longer paper.

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
