This course presents an introduction to the prehistory of monumental (i.e., religious) architecture in sub-Saharan Africa (accessible partly by archaeology). We then look at the history of both domestic and religious architecture in pre-colonial West Central Africa; we conclude by looking at the use of architecture by European powers as a means of articulating colonial power and authority in the period 1884-1960.
