This course investigates the diverse responses of 19th-century painters and photographers to the myth and reality of the North American landscape. For what purposes did visual artists pictorialize the landscape? How did their interpretations compare to those formulated by American writers and poets? How and why did attitudes to and imaging of the landscape change over the course of the 19th century?
