Women and the Visual Arts in America (to 1930)

This course will survey the history of women's involvement in the visual arts in the United States by examining the careers of specific women who have worked as artists (amateur and professional), critics, commentators, collectors or patrons (or combinations thereof) from the colonial period to the early 20th century. Topics to be addressed will include patterns of training, employment opportunities and patronage, association with professional artists' groups and exhibiting organizations, and th e authority of the feminine viewpoint in cultural and aesthetic issues in America.
