This historical survey begins with an introduction to the arts of Africa. It continues with a focus on Caribbean festival arts. These festivals include Trinidadian Carnival and the Jonkonnu Festivals of Jamaica and of coastal North Carolina. We also study Brooklyn Caribbean Day, using videotapes. A section on slave culture in the United States considers recent archeological evidence of the persistence of African material culture in slave society. This course may be taken independently of AFAM268.
