The Development of Archaeological Theory and Practice

This course will examine the origins of archeology as an interest in ancient material culture, through its establishment as an academic discipline, to it current multidisciplinary sophistication. Archaeologists from Childe to Binford and periods/regions from Pleistocene Africa to the complex societies of the Mesoamerica and Mediterranean will be discussed. Examples of different methods of analysis will be discussed.

Three papers and a class presentation.

ANTH151, CCIV/ANTH204, or other archaelogy courses recommended.

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
