Art and Society in Ancient Pompeii

Using archaeological, art-historical and literary sources, we will examine daily life in Pompeii and Herculaneum. Topics to be considered include: public monuments, private houses, spectacles, and social, cultural and
political activity.
MAJOR READINGS
A selection of readings in primary sources in translation (e.g., the letters of Pliny, ancient inscriptions, Petronius) and modern art-historical and archaeological studies.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Midterm, final and research paper and class presentation -- details to be announced.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
Some knowledge of the art, history or civilization of ancient Rome is strongly recommended.
