Interpretation of Myth

This course treats mythology as a system of communication and examines various approaches to the interpretation of myth. We will consider such issues as the structure of mythological systems, the relations between myth and other symbolic forms, the social and political implications of myth and the history of the concept of myth in Western thought. Readings are intended to introduce students to major theories of myth and to provide ethnographic contexts for interpretation.
