Challenges to African Societies in the Age of Globalization
ANTH386 FA

This course examines the social impact of globalization on postcolonial African societies. We begin by defining globalization and identifying its links with other political and economic processes, such as decolonization and development. We then explore the social impact of several aspects of globalization: economic marginalization, increased tourism, spread of rights discourse, and struggles over cultural diversity versus cultural homogenization. Course materials will treat Tanzania as a case study and will include anthropological analyses, my own research on women's rights, news articles from the African media, and at least five videotaped lectures delivered by Tanzanian scholars and activists.
