Ethnographic life histories and autobiographies can enrich our understanding of human experience and social issues, both historically and cross-culturally. This course will expose students to first-person accounts that augment and elaborate the kinds of social analysis associated with ethnographies and other anthropological writings. We will discuss how these personal narratives provide interpretations of the sociocultural processes that anthropologists study. Through careful readings of the texts, we will also examine the extent to which these accounts challenge the dominant cultural formations in which the speakers live. Readings will emphasize but not be limited to materials from the U.S. and Caribbean.
