Anthropology of Gender, Sexuality, and the Law

This course examines the social construction of gender and sexuality in several societies. We will discuss the significance of gender and sexuality in terms of kinship structure and political economy. In particular,
Euro-American law and public policy
will be analyzed to see how the state and its ideological structures work to shape, value and control sexual orientation and the intimate relationships in our lives. The politics of homosexuality and lesbian and gay
communities in the United States will
be explored as a case study.

Two short essay papers (5-8 pages) and a take-home, essay final exam.
