Contemporary Anthropological Theory
ANTH201 FA

The course examines contemporary anthropological theory in terms of abstract concepts and ethnographic analyses. It will concentrate on several key theoretical approaches that anthropologists have used to understand society, such as structuralism, interpretation, Marxism, feminism, practice theory, critical ethnography, and post modern perspectives. Readings will focus on how these approaches figure in current debates among anthropologists.

MAJOR READINGS

Theoretical and ethnographic works of Douglas, Turner, Levi-Strauss, Wolf, Bourdieu, Geertz, among others.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Short papers, class presentations, longer take-home final.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

To be admitted students must have taken an Anthropology or other social science course at the 200 level.

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
