Novels, stories, and plays by Chinese about China--the major focus--are set alongside writings by other Asians and by non-Asians that take China as their theme. One issue is the evolution of the romance in China's literary history. Another is the image of China, romantic or not, and the desires it evokes in foreign minds. Both themes will be articulated through contrasts between premodern and modern writings, with emphasis on the modern side.
