The Ghost Story in East Asia
ALIT254 FA

Crosslistings: EAST254

This course examines tales of the strange from China, Korea, and Japan. After attempting to define the characteristics of each national grouping, we will consider differences between premodern tales of the strange and modern fantastic tales, as discussed in the writing of Tzvetan Todorov and others. We will also consider reasons that Mainland Chinese literature has, until recently, rejected tales of the strange as superstitous and has refused to rework them in modern form. No knowledge of an As ian language is required.
