Margins and Masculinity in Chinese Literature
ALIT241 SP

Until recently the literature of traditional China was taught with little attention to open questions about gender and privilege within this literary tradition. We will cover some major poets of the Tang and Song dynasties, as well as vernacular novels about military heroes, and short stories about ghosts and their lovers. The position of women, including the use of the femail voice by male writers will also be explored. We will conclude with a contrastive look at selected modern writings, in which the issue of gender is more self-consciously explored.
