The Chinese Poetic Tradition

This course examines the characteristics of traditional Chinese poetry with emphasis on the development of poetic forms, styles, themes and expressions. The study will focus on the most important genre in Chinese poetic literature, SHIH poetry. For a better understanding of Chinese poetry, we will also give attention to the biography of each major poet and the historical background of each poem. No knowledge of Chinese is required.
