Readings from the May Fourth Movement of 1919 will introduce China's modern literature and set literary developments in the context of social and political change. The second half of the course will follow the split between literatures on the mainland and on Taiwan, again with attention to politics and social change. Comparisons to Western literature will also be introduced as a means of defining what is characteristically Chinese about the various types of modern Chinese writing. The emphasis in the course is on fiction, but examples from drama and poetry will also be considered.
