Images of Women in Modern Japanese Literature

This course is designed to evaluate stereotypes of Japanese women by examining images presented in modern Japanese literary works by both male and female writers. The first quarter of this course is devoted to acquiring necessary background knowledge of Japanese women through classical Japanese literature. All readings will be in English translation. No knowledge of Japanese required.
