This seminar will examine the expressions of spirituality in the works of various black women singer-songwriters. We will focus primarily on work generated from a womanist (black feminist) perspective with African diasporic/Black Atlantic spiritual roots, independent of religious institutions. We will utilize an interdisciplinary approach to exploring black women's spirituality by looking at black women's literature, theory and film, in addition to music
