Art and Identity in the Black Atlantic World

This First-Year Initiative and seminar course explores the relationship between material culture and identity. Art and architecture play a central role in the definition of both individual and group identity. This seminar will select several case studies both from Africa and from the African Diaspora that illustrate the phenomenon whereby art expresses, symbolizes, or creates identity.
