How is the field of women's studies distinguished from established disciplines like art history, or anthropology, or biology, or literary studies? How has feminist scholarship changed the way questions are asked and answered in those disciplines, and how is women's studies in turn dependent on the theories and methods which that knowledge in the sciences, the social sciences, and the humanities? This course will introduce students to the interdisciplinary field of women's studies by examining the kinds of questions asked by feminist scholars in art history, anthropology, biology, and literature; we will consider how women's studies have transformed the established disciplines in the last 20 years, and in the process, will study the complex processes of the production of knowledge. Warning: Taking this course may be hazardous to your preconceived ideas.

Eight 500-word papers; two five-page papers; take-home final examination.
