A basic and rather general practical introduction to the work of the director. Topics to be considered will include the director's analysis of the text, collaboration with the designers, stage composition, movement, dynamics, rehearsal procedures, directorial "style." Students work on exercises which are presented by members of the THEA183. A fully-realized scene or short play will be the final exercise, staged as part of the "No-Doze" Theater Event on reading weekend.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Short written assignments and a final project.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

This class is a requirement for students who wish to direct for credit or with Theater Department sponsorship. Preference will be given to theater majors. Requirement: Basic production technique, script analysis, one course in acting. Students enrolled in the course must agree not to direct elsewhere during the semester. Admission to studio, performance, project and tutorial courses in theater is at the discretion of individual instructors, who take into account estimated talent, experience and the need to form balanced and effective working ensembles.
