This course is intended for first and second year students who plan to be heavily involved in the theater program. It is aimed to provide a common frame of reference in the Western "canon" of great and frequently revived plays, from the ancient Greeks to the present. Approximately 40 plays will be read outside class; scenes from many of them will be read aloud in class time, and a certain amount of time will be devoted to lecture about and discussion of the works considered. This will not be a history of the theater. There will be frequent quizzes and one final exam.

MAJOR READINGS

Forty plays.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Three short tests, plus final exam.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

This course is primarily intended for frosh and transfers intending to do intermediate and advanced work in theater. Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list.
