This course will focus on major Spanish intellectuals of the
late 19th and early 20th centuries, including Miguel de
Unamuno and Jose Ortega y Gasset. Special attention will be
given to their treatment of modernity, to their reaction to
the crisis of '98, to their writings on Latin America, as
well as to the reception of their works and categories by
Latin American intellectuals.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Oral presentations; three
short papers (3-5 pages); final paper.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
SPAN245 is intended
for students who have conmpleted SPAN223. Students who have
not done so should consult with the professor before
preregistering.
Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting
or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the
first class, they will be dropped from the class list.
NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form
to the Registrar's Office.
