Garcia Lorca and His World

This course is a study of the Spanish avant-garde movement
through the poetry and plays of one of Europe's most
celebrated authors. Attention will be given to the popular
culture to which Lorca gave artistic form and to the problem
of surrealism in the visual arts (Joan Miro, Salvador Dali,
Luis Bunuel). Readings will include the poetry and plays of
collateral writers who, with Lorca, constitute the so-called
generacion del 27.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Written: three short papers
and one term project. Oral: Three to four oral reports
(depending on the size of the class). All readings,
discussions and assignments are conducted exclusively IN
SPANISH. From time to time, students will be expected to
attend the Language Laboratory to listen to tapes and see
videos.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
SPAN244 is intended
for students who have completed SPAN223. Students who have
not done so should consult with the professor before
preregistering.
Only COL students may take the course Credit/Unsatisfactory,
all other students must take the course for a letter grade.
Unless preregistered students attend the first class
meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to
the first class, they will be dropped from the class list.
NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form
to the Registrar's Office.
