Discourse and the Production of Meaning

How do we move from empirical data about women to a feminist
analysis? How do we understand and use various feminist
theories? How do we factor both power and resistance into
our analyses? To address these questions we will analyze
transcripts of doctor-patient and nurse practitioner-patient
communication (discourse) and newspaper texts that discuss
the Baby M case, the Hill/Thomas hearings, the Kennedy and
Tyson rape trials and media discussions about homosexual men
and lesbian women in the military. Moving from this
empirical base, we will read and discuss ways to analyze
these materials.

There are no exams. Library
work, hands-on work with discursive and textual materials
and collective research papers.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
A prerequisite
override form, secured through the Registrar's Office, will
be available for SISP and WMST majors and pre-med students.
Sophomores will be considered during Drop/Add.
Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting
or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the
first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE:
Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the
Registrar's Office.
