As a central component of everyday life, work represents a
source of material survival and socio-economic status, a
means of exercising knowledge and skill, and a site of
social relations that include domination, compliance,
resistance, friendship,solidarity, rivalry, recognition,
and devaluation. This course will examine the experience of
work in contemporary US society,focusing on topics such as:
new management systems, paid vs. unpaid work, gendered work,
emotional labor and service employment, the increase in
temporary and other "nonstandard" forms of work, emerging
redefinitions of the professional career, the future of
work. Readings primarily based on ethnographic accounts,
culminating in your own analysis of a workplace or an
occupation.
