SOC 254
Latino Politics and Identity
SOC 254 FA
Crosslistings: AMST250
Not Currently Offered
This course will examine the ways Mexicans, Puerto Ricans,
Cubans and Central Americans in the U.S. are transformed by
negotiating the border between their cultures of origin and
that of the U.S. The manner and extent to which this
occurs, and the politics that emerge from these
transformations, differ markedly across these
nationality-based groups. The role of U.S. social
institutions like courts, legislatures and schools in
structuring the interactions between Latino communities and
other Americans (Anglo, African and Asian) will be explored,
examining issues such as immigration, education, economic
relations and language.
