Latino American Minorities in the United States

This course will examine the Latino experience in the United
States from several perspectives. The historical presence
will be explored through different theories of migration.
The course will also explore the cultural conflicts between
Latino and the prevailing North American culture and some
of the consequences of this interaction on Latino identity.
Another section of the class will examine the current
social-economic status of Latinos in the United States.
For example, it is projected that in a few years, Latinos
will be the largest ethnic-social group in the country, yet
by many social-economic indicators, Latinos are among the
most disadvantaged groups in the country.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
Attendance will
be taken under consideration as part of the final grade,
since class will only meet once a week. Students are
expected to do all of the required readings. Final grade
will be predicated upon attendance, class participation,
essay, examination, and research paper. Course is
recommended for sophomores and up who are familiar with
general Anthropological and/or Sociological concepts.
Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting
or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the
first class, they will be dropped from the class list.
NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form
to the Registrar's Office.
