This course has two major goals: first, to explore the experience and variety of class-structured inequality in terms of its consequences for the lives of individuals and character of contemporary society; second, to consider class structure, organization, and awareness as they are affected by race, ethnicity, gender, and ideology. The perspectives of Marx and Weber provide a central theoretical base for evaluating contemporary attempts to understand stratification.
