The purposes of this course are two-fold: first, to use a
range of theoretical and historical perspectives to examine
the family as a social and cultural construct; second, to
examine topics in American family life such as family
formation and definition, the changing meanings of marriage
and parenthood, marital dissolution, domestic violence,
family power dynamics, the relationship of paid work and
housework, the role of families in social reproduction, and
feminist critiques of family. Special attention will be
paidto current policy debates.
