The Gogolian Tradition in Russian Literature

The course will define the artistic universe of Gogol and
trace the way in which the Gogolian legacy--marked by
stylistic excrescence, a flair for the grotesque, and the
incursion of the demonic into a superficially realistic
discourse--has been inherited and adapted by later Russian
writers such as Bely, Bulgakov, and Sinjavsky.

Two papers and oral reports.

be in English. Students who read Russian may do special
projects using material not yet translated into English.
