Contemporary Israeli Literature in Translation

The seminar will focus on recent short stories and novels in English translation as they express and shape current cultural and social pre-occupations among Israelis. Some of the themes examined will include individual search for identity, the relations of Diaspora and Homeland, pioneer ideology, the lingering shadow of the Holocaust, the relations between Jewish Israelis and Arabs.

Appelfeld, A.B. Yehoshua and others.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Class reports, frequent short papers, one longer paper, final exam.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

For those students in the semi;nar with advanced Hebrew there will be an optional half-credit group tutorial available to read and discuss in Hebrew portions of the weekly assignments. Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
